Launched in 2025, The SUNN Post is America’s first national, nonprofit student newspaper. We commission and republish high school and collegiate reporting, features, and opinion writing on topics like politics and government, entertainment and culture, science, education, health, climate, and more. All of our writing and original illustrations and graphics are by students, for students — and the teachers, parents and mentors invested in their futures. A significant portion of what we publish comes from an extraordinary and growing network of 150+ affiliated school papers across 30 states.
The SUNN Post is a publication of SUNN, or Students United News Network. SUNN is a program that publishes the nation’s best student journalism and civic media — through this national newspaper, through a student-run local paper in Nashville called Nashville SUNN, and through SUNN contests. It is operated by the nonprofit Kidizenship.
Mission
We believe student journalism is a vital form of lived civics education that teaches students to inquire, research, fact-check, and consider new perspectives — work that is especially important as youth trust in traditional media declines and student journalism programs collapse. We professionalize student work and provide a platform for young people to be heard and to participate in the national conversation.
How We Work
We support young journalists and professionalize their work by:
Commissioning stories: We commission new work from our team of student reporters nationwide. We also accept pitches.
Republishing stories: Student journalists in the SUNN network of schools pitch their best existing stories for potential republication. We are interested in a wide range of stories that matter to students and young people. We also publish stories that have been censored by high schools, colleges, or universities.
Editing and fact-checking: Whether a story is commissioned or republished, our editorial team edits every story and mentors the student writer, helping them polish, fact-check, and professionalize their work for national publication.
Publishing: We publish several pieces per week on our site, including a mix of commissioned and republished content.
Compensation: Student journalists, illustrators, graphic designers, and photographers are paid for their work.
Sharing: We share content with our partners and periodically adapt it for social media channels like Instagram (@sunn.posts).
